Sustainable Fashion.

Industry, thrift and self control are not sought because they create wealth, but because they create character.”

sustainable fashion growth.

love the feeling of those three words. My hunt for a deal is a family affair. I learned to hone my fashion eye thanks to the Matriarch of my family; my beloved Granny! Reading those words remind me of walking hand in hand with my Granny to find the deals at a local Goodwill or consignment shop. Living in the adage of “one man’s trash is another’s treasure.” We, my Granny and I, found so much treasure in our thrifting years which collectively is over 75 years! That’s a lot of fashion trends, a lot of fashion faux pas and a lot of fashion experience to find our respective styles. Warranted or not, we always shared our opinions about the others’ fashion selections.

The secondhand clothing market is projected to more than triple in the next 10 years. Sustainable fashion is more popular than ever. According to a new report from ThredUp (a resale retailer), in 2019 secondhand clothing expanded 21x faster than conventional apparel retail did. And over the next 10 years, while fast fashion is expected to grow 20%, secondhand fashion is projected to grow 185%. You read that right: One hundred and eighty-five!

The report projects the secondhand market will grow from $28 billion in 2019 to $80 billion in 2029.

It’s made up of two major categories: thrift stores and resale platforms. Resale platforms fueled the more recent growth, and helped change the perception of secondhand clothing as worn out - to be of identical, or even better quality. They found the trend of “fashion flipping” —- curating and then reselling secondhand clothing —- to be a growing trend as well.

Question: where do you fall on the consignment spectrum? From “I visit thrift stores regularly” to “I haven’t even considered thrift stores as an option.” Excited to hear your stories and thoughts.
