Date 09 - Willie Wonka and All That Chocolate

  • The Scene: Trinidad and Tobago Carnival.

  • The Attire: 70s-themed flowered mini dress complete with an afro wig and white knee-high boots.

  •  The Meeting: He and I locked eyes after observing two singles (who were not “together”) dancing and grinding so hard on one another that they fell face-first on the Savannah Grass. We were both in awe and shocked but entertained. In our respective zones of amusement and astonishment, we locked eyes. I, then, decided to approach him after finding out he was a photographer to ask him if he had the capacity for freelance. I wanted to have pictures taken during the carnival on Tuesday with my over-the-top frontline costume.

  •  The Environment: Energetic and contagious!

After taking his WhatsApp information and taking a photo together, we traveled our separate ways. I returned to the hotel, excited that I found a photographer to capture my experience; I immediately wrote to him. He wrote back, and our flirtatious engagement ensued. I was smitten by him because he is gorgeous, well-traveled, charismatic, funny, sarcastic, and all with an incredibly attractive accent – I mean DAMN! We talked and texted extensively over the next few days, which was nice.

On the day of the carnival, I was nervous because the Wi-Fi was spotty, and it was our sole means of communication. I was connected to WiFi sporadically, which did not allow for the luxury of finding someone. As my band was crossing the first stage with the music maddening my movements, I see someone moving folks out of the way. The crowd parted, and dead in the center was HIM! As if the sea parted ways amidst feathers and wings to land on his beautiful chocolate face, I thought, “Willie Wonka and all that chocolate!” He looked right at me and said, “Cherrod!” He hugs me while attempting to also capture photos left and right. I did not want to interrupt his groove, so I continued dancing away. Later, he told me that he asked me to wait, and I, apparently, did not hear that.

We missed each other, but later in the week, we had a phone date that I would hold dear. I mean, a man that is clear about his intentions, his desires, and his direction is beyond attractive. Too bad that he is enjoying singlehood, and I applaud him as he makes his moves!

  • Note to Self: Understand that people are in your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. I appreciate his reason in mine.

  • Shout Out to Men: Continue to do your thing!

  • Question: Why is it so difficult to live with an open hand?
